Uedingu hai (2022)
Japanese wedding comedy/drama
'Wedding High' is a movie about a couple getting married. The build up is pretty slow, but it is still entertaing enough and it's worth watching the whole thing. It begins with the couple in full wedding attire briefly, only to flashback to where it began from different perspectives, additionally interwoven with characters that play a role later on in the movie. As expected, 'Wedding High' is romantic of course, partly comedy, and a bit of drama and crime is thrown in the mix as well. The photography is beautiful too, especially the scene where the guests perform their own acts is a highlight. As a bonus we, and by 'we' I mean non-Japanese, get to see how Japanese people celebrate weddings, which in itself is pretty interesting.
Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Motokano datta (2022)
Great idea well executed - I love this show!
This anime begins with Yume and Mizuto in the hallway of their new joint home. Their respective parents married each other, making Yume and Mizuto step-siblings. Yume and Mizuto keep a secret from their parents: They used to date way before them. That makes the situation complicated, plus they hate each other a bit and fight about the privilege of being the older sibling. It turns out they're still hung up on each other, so things are getting pretty interesting.
The development of the characters during the show is intriguing, and with the help of a couple of flashbacks the depths of their emotions and minds come to light.
I really loved the show, it's romantic and it has some comedy elements in it too. There are 12 episodes, I binged 5, 5 more the next day and then watched the last two. The concept of the show is simple, yet brilliant. The artwork is beautiful, there is a little bit of fan service (but not too much) and the music is very nice also. G.
16bit sensêshon: Another Layer (2023)
Entertaining show mostly for gamers
16bit Sensation is an homage to Tokyo's 'electric town' Akihabara and otaku culture, especially bishojo games. The main protagonist in the anime is Konoha Akisato, she works at a bishojo game company as an illustrator. She's very enthusiastic and when she does things, she's doing them highly motivated. She is cute, yet also pretty annoying, especially considering her high-pitched voice. Although she loves being an illustrator, she is made to do the most boring jobs at her company, which is very frustrating for her. However, her fate takes a drastic turn when she discovers a store with old computer games during her lunch break.
The story line has a time travel twist, and there's even a reference to 'Back to the future'. There are more references to old Japanese computer platforms like the PC-98, the Comiket and we get to see how Akihabara looked in the nineties, which is nice.
I binged the first 3 or 4 episodes, and the show is entertaining enough with some interesting turns, but in the last 3 episodes the show is taking a pretty weird turn, and the ending seems a bit rushed.
Jessica Jones (2015)
This could have been so much better!
What I really like about this show, is the dark atmosphere and the cinematography. Krysten Ritter is a good fit for the role of Jessica Jones. However, the show is nowhere near as good as Daredevil. Daredevil is addictive, Jessica Jones is more like something you keep watching because you have watched the good stuff already. The cinematography, the acting and directing is not the problem, what is bugging me are some really important and annoying flaws in the script. According to the story the antagonist's weapon, his voice, which he uses to command people as he pleases, works only when his victims are able to hear him. What would be easier than wearing ear-buds listening to loud music, thus being unable to hear the magic spells? Also, when Jessica is at arms length with Kilgrave and she could render him unconscious by punching him, she doesn't. Since the whole story about Kilgraves invincibility is based on the premise that you have to be able to hear his voice in order to be influenced, the whole logic-defying story collapses like a house of cards. Jessica Jones will never be as exiting and suspenseful as series like Daredevil or Gotham, unless they find a script writer who can produce plots that are based on logic rather than erratic ideas. Last but not least, there are a lot of annoying sex scenes for no reason.
Sense8 (2015)
I'd rather watch paint dry...
So I read that review on IMDb, which kept praising that series, so my expectations were pretty high. As it turns out, this is super boring! After the first 30 minutes I couldn't bear that misery anymore. They show a bunch of seemingly unrelated guys from all over the world who seem to suffer from drug abuse, headache or migraine. There is one moment when a chicken in a bus in Africa suddenly appears on a desk in Korea, but obviously we don't deserve an explanation, why the chicken is in Africa and why it is in Korea all of the sudden, albeit for a short moment only. So how long do we have to endure this boredom before something remotely like a plot will begin to develop? When is this story taking off? Probably never. This esoteric cr*p feels like being trapped in a broken airplane being stopped for repairs even before taxiing to the runway. Imagine sitting for 6 hours or more on that plane... then you know how boring that waste of everybody's time and money is.
Ascension (2014)
Waste of time...
Warning! Contains some spoilers! Wow. This has to be the worst SciFi I've ever watched. Although the divine actress Tricia Helfer (Number Six from "Battlestar Galactica) is as brilliant as ever, she alone couldn't make up for the implausible and oftentimes moronic plot. The story lacks logic wherever possible, and after a time, when the script writers let the cat out of the bag, we learn that the crew is not actually on a spaceship, but on a simulated spaceship still on earth. We can't help noticing that the inside of said spaceship actually looks a lot like a fancy office building with a fancy design, which it actually is. And when you finally think that it couldn't any worse, it still does so with an esoteric twist. There is this annoying brat who has developed telekinetic powers, because when you force three generations of geniuses into a fake spaceship someone has to develop special powers! Right? Which said girl by the name of Christa uses to teleport the XO of the ship to a place that looks like the Mohave desert with puddles all over or some distant planet. So when this confusing excuse of a SciFi story finally gets a little bit exiting, they just kill the story, leave the poor XO stranded in the Mohave desert with puddles or an alien planet without any food, water or breeding. Which we get to see a lot for no reason. The breeding, that is. One thing comes in mind while watching this garbage: Total waste of time.
