Hula Girl (2011)
A quirky comedy come road movie that makes you smile
This is an excellent documentary come road movie with poignancy and comedy mixed throughout which results in a very enjoyable film to watch. It is unusual in its subject matter and follows a young man's quest to meet a 'hula girl', he has seen on the internet, in person to express his admiration of her hula hooping skills as he feels as an e-mail would not be enough. The problem is the girl lives in the USA and her whereabouts are not known. The film follows this young man and his friend on their journey to find this girl with very little information of her whereabouts to go on. On the way the two friends meet a variety of people and we see their varying reactions to their quest, which provides some of the comedic moments in the film. We see how their various trails are followed and then go cold and we feel their frustration and despair as it looks more and more as if they will not succeed in their quest. There are other comedy moments with hula hoops appearing on the way. The scenery is beautiful, the camera shots and music accompanying the journey are very evocative and we are kept guessing about the outcome of the journey up to the end.
