Beads on One String (2011)
an glimpse of a journey
This documentary is just an hour long and as such, no more than a very brief glimpse into what was clearly a profound journey for the 50 pilgrims. People's backstories are for the most part not presented, and the run time means we have little time to get to know them, or the sites they visit on the journey. All of that said, it's a beautiful watch and conveys a strong but subtle sense of the spiritual path they are on. I only wish it had been a series, as it would have been wonderful to spend more time with theses diverse pilgrims. As it is, it's a moving glimpse, which I found stirring.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Unpleasant, boring, pretentious
The cinematography is vey good, as is the acting but other than that, I hated this film. Once I start a film I have to see it through but it was a hard slog. Deeply pretentious, pointlessly unpleasant, devoid of any affect and boring - which is quite a feat considering the general nastiness and the moments of blood.
Wish I could unwatch it. Spare yourself!
