Willy's Wonderland (2021)
Delightfully Cage!
If you're a Cage fan, you're gonna love the hell outfit this. If you're looking for a complicated plot or a 'deep', thought-provoking movie, go elsewhere. Me? I'm coming back in my next life as a pinball machine!
Life (2017)
Not nearly as bad as people are making out
I watch a lot of movies, but I don't tend to write reviews. Like most people, I check out reviews on IMDb before I decide to watch a movie. I can't tell you how many movies I've been put off by horrendous reviews. In reality there are a lot of people out there who forget what a movie is there to do - to entertain! I read constant comments regarding how ridiculous and unlikely the scenarios in the movie are. How 'that just wouldn't/couldn't happen!'. This is NOT a documentary guys!! It's science FICTION! Try to leave your fact checking at the door when you watch a movie. Enjoy it! Let it do it's job and transport you somewhere else. For me, this movie did just that. It was engaging, I cared about the characters, the acting was spot on (I mean COME ON!! Jake Gyllenhall & Ryan Reynolds can't act all of a sudden?? Rubbish!). Give the movie a chance. It's entertaining. I held my breath while watching quite a few times. I cringed. I recoiled. Judge for yourself. Don't let the fact checkers spoil this fun piece of fiction!!
Visions (2015)
Unscary, unoriginal, mediocre movie. Don't let the cast fool you.
Like probably every other person who watched this movie, I did so due to the strong cast it boasted. If this movie consisted of a list of unknowns, I very much doubt many people would even give it a chance at all.
I've always been a big fan of Isla Fishers, but sadly this movie shows she has definite limitations. Horror/thriller movies are just not for her. She comes across completely false in her role, which should have had multiple layers and had the possibility of showcasing her acting talent. Instead it illustrated her discomfort within the world of serious acting. In chick-flicks and nice romantic comedies, Isla is perfect, but when a role calls for something a bit more than 1 dimensional, she struggles and becomes insanely irritating. Jim Parsons seems unable to rid himself of the shackles that is Sheldon Cooper. Will he ever be rid of that role?
This movie contains pretty much every stereotype that a film fan could expect. Even if you have never watched this movie before, you will know exactly where it's going. I have to say I rate this one as quite poor. It didn't scare me, make me jump, surprise me or immerse me. I was actually looking forward to the ending, which is never a good sign.
I would advise to avoid.
Pandemic (2016)
A first person perspective peek into the world of the infected.
I've always been a big fan of zombie/outbreak/infection movies in all their guises. This perspective however, I had not experienced before.
To start with I wasn't overly enamored with the cast. The lead actress Rachel Nichols (Lauren), struck me as being someone who should have been playing a supportive role rather than trying to carry the movie. She plays a doctor, Lauren, brought in to help in the fight against any further spread of the disease, which has already infected more than it hasn't. The story revolves around a mission to rescue a previous team of uninfected who have failed to return to base.
As I already said, attachment to the cast wasn't a strong point here. At least not until Alfie Allen who plays 'Wheeler' comes into his own. He plays a very background role until we're more than halfway into the movie, but when he comes to the fore, the movie is much improved.
The main pull of this movie for me and the one thing which makes it interesting is the first person perspective we see during the infected attacks. It definitely makes you feel more involved. Gore is quite full-on and explicit, which is always good in this kind of movie, so special effects definitely did their job well in this respect. Sadly in the case of a lot of background shots, the CGI is lacking. I can recall a bus on fire, which was just plain atrocious!
I would recommend this to fans of zombie movies, just for the change of perspective, but overall, I don't think it's a movie that I would recommend to a casual movie fan.
The Call Up (2016)
Inventive, immersive and entertaining with a bit of an anti-climax
As someone who used to enjoy gaming a lot before the house was taken over by a wee one, I have to say, the kind of virtual reality shown in this movie seemed like a dream. Thing is, it very quickly turns into a nightmare. I can imagine most Gamers would enjoy the movie, even if it were only for the possibilities....
The movie follows a group of elite Gamers who are called up to try out a new virtual reality experience. When things quickly take a sinister turn, are the best-of-the-best good enough to finish the game?
I enjoyed The Call Up as I quickly became engaged with the characters. The acting was solid and the special effects were spot on. It takes you to the next level of game-play and makes you think about what we actually do in games when we're blowing each others heads off. There is a kind of predictability of sorts, but that would be nigh on impossible for this not to be the case and it's not as if the entire story is wide open.
The ending was a bit of an anticlimax, but in actual fact, this probably is a good thing given the mood of the movie.
I did enjoy the movie and would recommend it to any Gamers or avid movie watchers. It's never going to be a blockbuster or total crowd pleaser, but I didn't feel I'd wasted time by watching it (how I judge most movies) and I wouldn't be averse to watching it again. If you don't find the prospect of virtual reality intriguing or feel like gaming is for kids, then probably best to give this one a wide berth.
