After Everything (2023)
Make a movie without your female lead? No thanks.
As a longtime fan following this franchise, it was obvious some stuff went down outside of filming. I guess the repercussions of that meant losing Josephine as our female lead. What's After without the source of the story? Don't get me wrong, Hero was great. But it didn't feel the same. He was incomplete. This movie served no purpose other than to promote Hero in a stand alone film. It was watchable but if you're watching it as part of the series, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Completely and utterly offensive to see Josephine only have about 15 minutes of legitimate screen time. And I'm not talking about flashbacks. What even was that? I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm glad the After era is over.
After Ever Happy (2022)
Genuinely Shocked By The Bad Reviews!
I'm not saying this is one of the best films I've seen in a while, but it's pretty freaking good. First of all, if you haven't read the books or at least seen the other three films, then you're probably going to be lost. So it's not fair to rate this film poorly based off a plot that you may have no idea about. Secondly, this is probably one of the better films if not the best film in the series. The two leads acted their hearts out, especially the male lead, and it's safe to say they've corrected any "mistakes" they've made from previous films. Overall, the film was pretty damn good. It stayed true to the books and characters, the sex scenes weren't in-your-face and placed strategically at the right time to aid the storyline, and the emotional, thematic material was raw and actually pretty realistic. Sure, there were a few silly moments that probably deserved the lower ratings. But overall, this film was well made. Loved seeing a female lead stand up for herself and what she believes is right in a relationship. Loved seeing a male lead own up to his actions and realistically see the professional help he desperately needed. Hopefully the next film does this one justice.
After (2019)
Different but a good different.
As a hardcore fan of the books, I often find that book to film adaptations struggle to meet the expectations of readers. With After, I have to admit that it was very different from the book. However, the reasonings for change were justifiable and it made for a great film. Although I felt things were slightly rushed and the changes were quite surprising, there were many wonderful things about the film. The cast did a great job and the chemistry was amazing. After deserves a chance.
