Pahanhautoja (2022)
It's movies like this that make me love Independent film!
I watched this little gem at my local Independent Theater last night. When the movie ended and people were walking out of the theater, I noticed that at least half of the people had big smiles on their faces, as did I. I was thinking about this movie the rest of the night and the first thing when I woke up this morning. This is such a gutsy movie to have made and I applaud everyone involved.
The Lost Daughter (2021)
Knowing what to expect
I think knowing what kind of movie you are about to watch plays a big role in how your experience will turn out. When I know a film is an independent film and a somewhat artsy indie film then I go into it assuming there is a chance it could be slow moving, or weird, or have a non-traditional structure, or have and ending that is not wrapped up in a bow, or be too deep for me to fully understand on the first viewing. I'm not saying that "The Lost Daughter" was necessarily any or all of these things, I'm just saying that I go into a movie like this with more patience and more of an open mind. In this case I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting into but I also think the trailer painted a picture of something a wee bit more thrilling than the final result. It was thrilling but on a much more subtle level. The movie is about a woman spending time alone at a resort. She has lot's of mental and social issues. There are flashbacks to earlier times in her life that partially explain how she got this way. So we are mostly just seeing a character study of this woman, how she thinks, how she acts around other people, her regrets, etc. As a whole though I thought the movie was interesting and it kept me engaged the whole time. All of the acting was incredible, the flashback scenes were very effective, and the character study of Olivia Colman's character was on a much higher level than I have seen in most movies. There is a lot to evaluate and learn from in this story. Part of me wanted more thrills and chaos but that's probably because I've been watching so much Dexter lately. As far as individual moments go, this movie had plenty of brilliant ones which indicates to me that this director will be telling incredible stories for years to come. There are things happening here that are on a much higher level of film-making than I usually see. Dagmara Dominczyk's had a tiny little role but her performance was crazy good. I want see an entire movie written just for that character. All the actors playing Dagmara's character's family were great too. Dakota Johnson is one of my favorite actors. Her performance in Peanut Butter Falcon was perfection and she crushed it in this movie too.
Werewolves Within (2021)
Subtle & Charming
This movie popped up for rent in the iTunes store so I rented it immediately because I love werewolf movies. I started watching it and found it to be a but underwhelming so I turned it off. That was yesterday. I turned it back on today and was liking it a lot more. A lot of the humor was kind of subtle and unique. Once I knew what I was in for the whole movie suddenly seemed so much better. I started watching the movie a 2nd time and could not stop laughing. So I guess if you get the humor you will have a lot of fun with it. The cinematography works great for this type of movie and I was really pleased with the casting.
Scraps (2018)
Many laugh out loud moments!
It was so random that I watched this movie but I am very happy that I did. I just happened to see an article about the movie pop up on Facebook under my Sundance feed and it picked my interest. The article stated that the movie was made for less than $6,000 and I always love to see what film-makers can pull off on such low budgets. According to the article a lot of people worked for free but even if everyone was paid I'm guessing the movie would have still cost less than $300,000 to $500,000 which is still a very low budget in the film world. I loved this movie. The humor was right up my alley and the pacing was incredible. The ending was good but not as strong as the rest of the film. I rarely watch films more than once but I would watch this more than once and I would love to see this same cast and crew do another film. And for all you indie-film makers the article is really fascinating.
