Miss You Can Do It (2013)
Heart warming look at children with disabilities and one woman's special way of helping them
Miss You can do it is a heart warming look at children with disabilities and Abby Curan's pageant making these unfortunate girls feel special. At first look it seems like it is going to be a story about Abby and her life over coming her disability and winning the Miss Iowa pageant, but Abby is a small blip in a larger much more focus look on these little girls and the disabilities they suffer. It shows you what they over come everyday to just try and live normal lives. This pageant Abby created really helps them feel that way. You find that each story is different and touching in it own special way and at the end it brought a tear to my eye. I recommend watching this movie, because it really puts life in perspective. I give it a 10/10 because it is simply beautiful documentary and very touching.
Popatopolis (2009)
The Story of a B-Movie director breaking new grounds for film, but losing himself along the way.
Popatopolis is an in depth look at the B-movie genre focusing in on one of the all time greats Jim Wynorski. His concept of creating a film in three days is what the documentary focuses in on but behind that shell we find so much more depth. Wynorski, who has created more films then most directors ever, started out as a quiet kid with a wonderful mother, whom we get the pleasure of meeting. She tells of a kid who would read all the time and never had a girlfriend growing up. This kid would grow up to create films with subject matter featuring sex, explosions, and gratuitous violence. The genre of B-movies is examined throughout the documentary as we watch Wynorski and his crew of two try to make this film. Many of the actors and producers speak of the genre dying out. Actors no longer find B-movies as a way to break into film industry and with this comes the struggle that Wynorski faces. Starting out creating the B-movies he loves he slowly adjusted his focus moving more toward the soft core porn genre where the money is greater. One of the actresses goes into detail on how Wynorski use to care more about the movie and would take time to help the talent. Now taking on movies that are made in three days he seems to have lost that patience in his story telling. This is one of the key themes that I found while watching this movie. The focus was on the three day shoot, but was more so in examining a man at the last leg of his B-Movie creations. Lost in an a genre not willing to pay for the creators survival. The hey day may be gone, but Wynorski still has the creative wherewithal to survive. He just might not be making the same type of movies he once loved and adored.
