Jack et la mécanique du coeur (2013)
My heart is conflicted...
As a fan of the album by Dionysos and book by Mathias Malzieu this is based on, I'm surprised in myself for having waited that long to watch this movie.
I guess mostly, what I get out of this experience at the end is a lot of frustration. This movie is filled to the brim with good ideas, brilliant designs and animated moments, creative , and it's obvious a lot of love and care has been put into making this movie.
Regardless of that, knowing the base material, I can't help but think of what could have been. Some of the design choices for the characters and cut to the stories that have been made seemed rather off to me and impaired the experience.
All of the songs taken from the album are gorgeous, but in my opinion, the way they've been put into the movie doesn't do them justice. It doesn't flow seamlessly, and it feels at times like watching a music video that has little to do with the movie itself.
Some of the choices regarding the story as well give it a big problem when it comes to pacing. The story in itself is beautiful, poetic, has this creepier/darker side to it that gives it this very unique style; but that is all thanks to the original material. Everything to do with how it was adapted on screen as a story feels like a miss, which I'm guessing has to do with the fact that they had to make this into an animated movie for children. The dialogues are too on the nose and not cinematic at all. Some moments are really strong, and some others that are supposed to be strong fall completely flat. You can also feel the limitations of the animation not being as high budget when it comes to the scenes that are supposed to be more action-oriented. That's too bad, but not really anyone working on the movie's fault.
In the end, I feel like someone who hasn't read the book would probably take it more as what it is in itself than me, and maybe enjoy it more. I'd still recommend this movie, especially since it's such a breath of fresh air when it comes to animation and what we're used to seeing in the more mainstream. Just for some of the gorgeous designs, it's worth a watch. I you go in without any expectations, I'm sure you'll love it.
But, hmm...maybe, read the novel too after, if you haven't.
