The Strangers: Chapter 1 (2024)
The changers
Another remake/standalone sequel no one asked for. No more movies should have been made after the first one, it's just unnecessary since it was already very good. As someone who watched the original from 2008 and the following from 2018, I have to say that the first one is the best of the three and better than the second one which better than this one.
Those who watched the other movies probably can tell that the strangers aren't the same as they were back then even though they have masks on. And I'm not talking only about the fact that Dollface and Pin Up look different and weird with those winter hats. The strangers have changed and it's not only them.
Mostly, the movie stays true to the original as it can but I felt like there are too many changes for the worse:
There are needless characters that add some tension to the movie but add nothing to the plot (like the diner people, the car fixer man and Maya's friend on the phone). There are objects that could be useful for the story but seen only once or twice and have no value (like Ryan's inhaler, Maya's phone and some scary masks in the closet) + The strangers don't unmask themselves nor get unmasked by someone else. + The two religious young boys appear in the beginning instead of the end and they look creepier, like they are the bad guys in the movie. + There are too much hiding and wandering in the forest, and less interaction between the couple and the strangers. + The couple didn't talk on the phone in a tense conversation while Ryan was out (too much time), Maya just left him a voice message he didn't even hear. What was it for? + This time the strangers left the house because of the police and not because they finished their killings.
Further to the comparison with the original, In this movie it took longer for the action to start and this one was quite predictable. Also, the chemistry between the main actors who play the couple was less successful.
In general, it's an average movie. It wasn't bad, it was just nice but not enough. You can enjoy it but not at the same level as the original movie because it doesn't deliver the same emotion like the original. I wouldn't say that this movie ruined the original, after all there's no plot connection between them, but if watching "The Strangers" then it should be the original. Definitely less good than the original but also better than many other horror movies out there these years.
Primer (2004)
Prime example of boredom
I tried but couldn't find the movie good, mostly because not a single thing was interesting about it. If it was possible to rate it 0 I would do it. This is the worst time travel/science fiction movie I've ever seen and one of the worst movies ever. I wish I was the one who could go back in time to make sure I won't watch this movie.
Boring story, boring characters, boring script. If you want to fall asleep and sleep well then this is the movie for you. From the first moments to the end it's only talks, endless pointless dialogues. You could go eat something, come back and still not miss anything. And why is the movie also considered as a thriller? Seriously, where was all the thriller?
While watching I was wondering if it's a just a poor movie or a tape of physics lessons. I don't know if you can even call this thing a movie. The whole movie looks like a cheap student movie with banal and unoriginal idea. No plot, no development. So flat. Could it be more unprofessional and amateurish? Even the cinematography isn't great.
Every minute I kept waiting for it to end and I don't know how I survived the watching until the end, I think I deserve a medal for that. I can't understand how movies like this get a green light. Highly recommended for insomnia sufferers.
Mother! (2017)
Mother! No!
People said it was a weird movie so I decided to watch it and make up my own mind. Weird? Yes, but it doesn't bother me. The biggest problem in the movie is that there's no moment where it explains itself or brings a decent solution to everything we have just seen. It's like a huge nonesense.
I kinda got all this allegory theme thing about god and mother earth, but it still doesn't make sense. It's not really clear what the purpose of the movie is and what Darren Aronofsky is actually trying to say here. The movie is trying too hard to be smart, like it has some hidden meanings, but the result is a stupid and ridiculous movie that lost it's point.
It started well but then got more and more exaggerated with more and more "WTF" moments, too much to take. With time it only gets worse, that's a shame. The second half was messy and cringey, very annoying.
Also, it could and should be shorter (something like an hour and a half is enough), two hours is a lot for this movie.
Honestly, at first I liked the movie until some point (around one hour into the movie), then I changed my mind during the watching and didn't like it. I believe that with more proper writing it will all be better and work out somehow.
Yet, there're good things about it that kept my eyes on the screen: the pretty interesting story, the dark atmosphere, and the great acting - especially Jennifer Lawrence's performance (Michelle Pfeiffer's too) which was on point.
