Dragons: Riders of Berk (2012)
Enjoyable to watch
I'm a big fan of HTTYD so I thought I'd give this show a try. At first I wasn't sure, but it really grew on me. I haven't finished the entire show yet, I'm on season 3 but it's actually really entertaining! My only criticism is that some episodes are predictable and feel like filler episodes, however considering I'm older than the target audience it's not a big deal. It's still a great show and majority of the episodes are really engaging, they don't shy away from high stakes plot lines. The animation is actually surprisingly good, definitely not the movie quality but it holds up well. I really like this show and I love how it lines up with the timelines of the movies. It makes you feel much more connected to the characters and their world.
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
Literal garbage
This may be the worst movie I have EVER seen in my lifetime. I see a lot of other reviewers giving this movie a 10. I have no idea what movie they watched, but it couldn't have been this heaping load of s###.
It's been a while since I watched this so my review won't be very specific, but I need to rant about this awful movie.
Um talking heads much? Seriously this movie was 90% talking and expositional dialogue that literally meant nothing to the storyline. Oh wait, there was no storyline. The plot tried to be "surprising" or something but it ended up being a bunch of disgustingly violent, horrifyingly cringey, and just vile scenes that made no sense.
Was there character development? Not really. Did the story have a point? Not really. Did I waste 2 hours of my life? Most definitely. I won't touch this movie with a 10 foot pole. Watching this movie is literally a form of self harm.
Do not watch this movie if you want to keep your sanity.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
Amazing film, but the gargoyles...
Let me just say, this is one of the best Disney animated movies out there. It is a personal favorite of mine. However, the gargoyle characters set my nerves off.
Let's start with what this movie did right: Incredible animation, music, a compelling storyline that doesn't talk down to the audience. It's a surprisingly grown up movie for a disney animated feature, and I love that about it.
But the gargoyles. Ugh the gargoyles. AKA the bane of my existence. I cannot stand a single thing they say. Don't get me wrong, they don't have enough screen time to completely ruin the movie. But I believe if these characters were cut from the movie the film would be worthy of a 10 star rating.
It's obvious disney threw them in there to buffer the dark theme of the movie for the kids. But if you're gonna go dark, go all out. The gargoyles are supposed to be "comic reliefs" but I find myself laughing less and more wanting to pull my hair out. Nothing about the gargoyles is funny or likeable in any way.
Also the gargoyles song is completely ridiculous and out of place. The storyline is getting more intense and they just throw in this goofy song. It throws off the pacing so much. Many of the gargoyle scenes are at least tolerable, but this is the scene that really makes me hate the gargoyles.
Okay I've been focusing too much on the negatives of this film. This movie is a masterpiece. But I just wish the gargoyles were cut out.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Totally sucked
I wasn't even excited for this movie, didn't expect much. My assumptions were right. Complete waste of time movie. Very lacking in story, there were so many pointless things going on and the character decisions made no sense. The dialogue was laughable. I don't think I've ever yawned so much in such a short (but unbearably long) duration. Insanely boring. They could have made the movie 2 hours easily. This movie was a complete failure.
Amadeus (1984)
A masterpiece.
Amadeus is a truly incredible movie, a work of art. Writing, directing, music, acting, set design, costumes, everything was done incredibly well.
It is storytelling at it's finest. There is not a single scene that isn't important to the story, and every scene is wonderful. All of the characters are well The relationship between jealousy, rivalry, and adoration is intriguing and compelling. This movie is a must watch for anyone creative. As a writer, I believe this film captures the creative process and internal struggles that many creatives deal with. The movie flows seamlessly and dare I say perfectly.
This movie will forever remain a favorite. An unforgettable masterpiece.
Coneheads (1993)
Terrible, just terrible
The fact that people actually like this movie baffles me. What movie are you watching? Because it can't be the one I just saw. The humor is cheap as well as stupid. The storyline is basic and I don't care about any of the characters or their motivations. A complete waste of time movie. Just because it has a lot of famous actors doesn't make it good. This was the most unbelievably god-awful movie I've seen this year.
What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
Didn't hold my attention.
When I started watching this movie, I thought I was gonna be in for some good dark comedy, or at least entertainment. I was wrong. I only got 30 minutes into it and I thought it was almost over, it just drags on and on. We get it. They're vampires so they have "kooky" and "quirky" antics. You can't just repeat the same type of cheap jokes over and over and call it a story line. And you know, maybe the rest of the movie is incredible. But that doesn't matter because the first 30 minutes are a waste of my time, so I'm not gonna keep watching. I know comedy is subjective and people have different humor styles, but just because something is shot "documentary style" doesn't make it funny. Oh because The Office did it, so that filming style is automatically a "laugh riot". Please.
Community (2009)
My all time favorite show
I have watched this show in its entirety countless times. It is a show that never gets old and will keep you laughing every time you watch it. The characters are brilliant, every one of them having unique personalities that blend together perfectly. Not to mention how absolutely hilarious some of the characters can be (the Dean and Chang especially). This show isn't afraid to break into different styles and get creative. It plays around with genres and spoofs. Super entertaining and funny.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
Really engaging and funny
I originally watched this show because I was a fan of Andy Samberg on SNL. I already had high hopes for it, but I was blown away about how great this show is. It has a really good sense of humor that doesn't rely on a laugh track. It doesn't need one because the comedy is actually good. Every episode is an adventure. All the characters are brilliant and make the show what it is. You will fall in love with all the characters and their personalities, it is so fun to see them grow throughout the seasons. While this show is a great comedy it knows how to bring serious issues and topics into it without changing the feel of the show. 10/10 great show!!
Aladdin (2019)
Don't compare it to the animated version
So many people don't like the film because they want it to be exactly like the animated version. Once you see it as its own thing I think it is a great movie. I know a lot of people like to rip on disney remakes but honestly it was a good movie. The casting was great, although Jafar could have been a little bit scarier. The story was similar to the original but had some added plot points that actually fit well. I am glad they gave Jasmine a stronger presence in this film. It had good comedy and action, the romance felt very realistic and organic. The music was great and I enjoyed that there was more instrumental intertwined in the songs. The visuals were stunning and beautiful. It was a very good movie.
Megamind (2010)
A story that never gets old
I recently re-watched this movie because I hadn't seen it in a very long time and I sort-of forgot the story. All I have to say is....WOW. What an incredible movie. There is a very good and powerful message about choosing your destiny/your actions and it sticks with you. This movie knows exactly when to be serious and when to be funny. All the characters are very dynamic and you care about them and what they do. Even though Megamind is a villain, he has likeable qualities that make you root for him. There is strong character growth and it has a very natural/realistic feel to it (even though it isn't a realistic setting). The humor in it is more mature that a lot of other Dreamworks movies. It doesn't just rely on fart jokes so kids will laugh. It genuinely has some good humor to it. I honestly find this to be one of the best Dreamworks/ animated movies out there. I have found myself re-watching it a couple times. It never gets old.
Suburban Gothic (2014)
Fun, Spooky, but a bit inappropriate
I enjoyed the camera work and color, the story was fun but had a deeper meaning too. I loved that it was kinda comedy/horror but it was just fun spookiness rather than horror. I will definitely watch it whenever Halloween comes around. I enjoyed the movie, but I feel that there was a lot of sexual jokes and swearing. Which is fine, but in my opinion they should have used less sex jokes and saying "fuck" every other sentence.
Life of Pi (2012)
A Cinematic Masterpiece
I had never read the book, but I decided to watch this movie after people I knew gave it amazing feedback. When I started the movie, I was impressed with the casting. I think they chose great actors to play Pi from his childhood all the way to adulthood. The acting was incredible, it felt really genuine and realistic. After the ship wreck and his survival story on the boat with the tiger, I was stunned again by the acting and visuals. The cinematography was absolutely mesmerizing, especially water reflection and the glowing sea creatures. It was very emotional, heart wrenching, and kept me on the edge of my seat. Many tears were shed. If you haven't seen it already I suggest you do!
