Happy Valley: Episode #3.2 (2023)
Very good but lazy with the locations
I share the normal positive views of the series but how daft was this episode? Catherine drives to Sheffield, which has no prison, and while walking around "Sheffield" the famous Wainhouse Tower in Halifax is in the background. It's like pretending its Birmingham with Big Ben in the shot. Very lazy. These are meant to be showcasing our northern towns and cities, so lets get them right.
The rest of the episode though is spot on. Slightly hampered by TLR being banged up, and its spoonfeeding us the obvious a bit, like whether the teacher is good or bad. But Catherine is, as ever, a heroine. Will tune back in.
Worzel Gummidge: Guy Forks (2021)
Scarecrow magic even extends to the seasons
It's bonfire night, 5th November, and the sun is high in the sky, leaves are on the trees and the vegetables are flowering. Some autumn scenes but only without actors, the main scenes were obviously filmed in summer, Kids probably won't notice.
Other than that a pleasant episode. The young actors are fairly tolerable and Toby Jones is good.
American Gods: Tears of the Wrath-Bearing Tree (2021)
Futile to watch unless story wrapped up
Frustrating for the show to re-enter alignment with the book only to stop suddenly in full flow.
So many questions unanswered, such as why Laura, who is Mr World, what happens to Shadow, why is Technical Boy important, is Wednesday dead, what role does Bilquis play?
All would have been answered and the book could have concluded with one more series. I hate it when companies drag us along like this and then cast us aside without giving us the full story that was promised.
Solid episode, full of revelations, but a frustrating lack of conclusion.
Sons of Anarchy: Black Widower (2014)
Brutal but in a way that builds the story
The whole premise of this show is Jax trying hard to be a good man but descending further and further into being a total fruitcake. That's a story that has been done time and time again - Sopranos, Godfather etc. The former is also similar in its "mummy issues".
This episode (especially the beginning and end) continues that trajectory. At this point (and I write before knowing) it is obvious it has to end in tears. I tend to be a nurture not nature guy, and this show, albeit fictional, shows me why.
