Trigger Warning (2024)
Yeah nah...
After researching more about this movie in Wikipedia and realising the director is someone from my country whose last indie movie was pretty successful and has the same vibe with this movie, it kinda tells...
I think the director really likes the western vibe, since the setting, the revenge story is like a throwback to the western genre but... oh boy... the movie's look - like the lighting - is very inconsistent.
The choices for some shots were also very bad and comical even. There was this scene where Jessica Alva (I don't even remember her character name) throw a bunch of punches to this guy sitting on a jeep... and they used 3-4 cuts and shot from different sides? It was so weird... and the whole colour grading and look just keep on changing. Sometimes you get a kinda dark somber look (the one used in the preview during the funeral) but then you get this really harsh light that you usually see in those tv shows...
The story is meh... offering nothing new. Basically all of this offers nothing new. I just feel bad if I put a 1 since at least the director tried..
Joko Anwar's Nightmares and Daydreams (2024)
It's not bad at all
As an Indonesian, I'm surprised we actually got this kind of quality.
I haven't watched a lot of Indonesian movie lately (or ever actually) because I really can't get into them. Usually the acting is really bad and the dialogues are cringe as well. The production is also usually pretty bad and low budget...
And so, I was surprised how delightful this series was. The production was definitely a step up from usual. Hell, the cgi was actually pretty good too and wow, the story is not bad at all.
It is far from perfect, like some episodes are stronger than the other (for me personally I like ep 3 the most, then 2), and there were some wtf moments that are not that great and dragged out (and don't get me started on the last episode and that girl who only has 1 emotion and can barely act...)
But overall, it was a pleasant watch. I love the horror stories and the Lovecraftian vibe. I won't mind having another s2 but will need some tighter story and scenes.
Madame Web (2024)
Who made this movie lol
Omg... the action (if you can call it that) is pretty bad. The way the main character (I don't even remember her name) first met the girls and got the girls to come with her is stupidly hilarious. The scene doesn't flow nicely at all... I wonder if they were planning to have a train action scene but like budget cut lol
I am glad I'm watching this trainwreck in netflix (considering the lack of trains getting wreck in this movie too! We want chaos! We want train wreck action scene lol).
There was barely any action scene... the bad guy is really... really BAD at his jobs.. can't even chase these girls and that 50 shades dakota johnson.
Dakota appeared to be done with this movie. The acting is sloopy and I really thought she was a lot better than this... but then again, I don't blame her as the character changes her pov asap after opening her window to save a bird.
Hit Man (2023)
That ending...
Glen Powell is freaking charming in this movie. Basically he is hot and I am all here for it. I can keep watching him changing his disguises. It was the good part of this movie, and the funniest.
Anathema (Love you Good Omen) is also hot. Like super hot. They are basically 2 good looking people in this twisted romcom story. The chemistry is good, their relationship portrayal is sexy and entertaining to watch but I do think the movie kinda drag on. There is no action or some set pieces, but it is pretty funny. It is not a bad movie at all but they really did cross the line morally lol.
Honestly, I thought Ron (Glen Powell) would be a serial killer. He has the look and the wtf script he churned out during his interrogation. I think its just a funny twist if he turned out be a serial killer that just off bad people as a hobby. Like dexter. But some bits of the movie won't work.
Overall, not a bad movie but kinda lacking something. But Glen Powell is amazing and I will support him and whatever movie he would be in.
Gojira -1.0 (2023)
Pretty fun watch
If it wasn't for the hype around this movie, I probably won't watch it. Never a big fan of Godzilla.
The movie itself was fun. Yes it was kinda ridiculous, especially the strategy on how to defeat Godzilla. Kinda funny honestly but Kamiki did a good job. I always enjoyed watching him acting, ever since he was little. We kinda grow up together. He is always a pleasure to watch on the screen. Such good portrayal of ptsd and some raw emotions.
Noriko was decent. The neighbour was another famous actress that I always don't remember her name. I enjoyed her performance in Monster and another drama.
Anyway, ad a Godzilla movie, this was fun. There was some cliche bits and moments but hey, the setting was good, the camera work was also good, and of course, the cgi was really good.
I felt the power when Godzilla did his first ray beam. I even got excited when I watched the scales lit up. Like wowowowowowowow. Amazing. Love those moments.
Kaibutsu no kikori (2023)
Pretty bad
I know nothing from this film and went in expecting some bloody horror and psychological thriller. Basically some good stuffs with Kame as the lead and Takashi Miike as the director... but in the end, the movie offered none of that.
Like.. the opening of the movie is probably the best bit for me. Showing how ruthless Kame is and how he is a psychopath but also killed people who like did harm (like Dexter). Then when the scene with the sprinkler came in, I was very disappointed. Like the killer decided to stop because he was rained on and some light got turned on? Like lol. There was no other people coming in for help etc. It was a pretty bad scene. And after that, it was just a snooze. No bloody murder scene, no horror or thriller... just all talk and some nonsense shenanigans about the chips on your head. Like lol...
I know it's based on a novel but the initial premise is kinda ridiculous and bad. Also again, the lighting is kinda meh... it felt like another j-drama movie. Nothing special about it.
Kame deserved better.
Reacher: Fly Boy (2024)
Kinda solid but also dumb
There are some scenes that doesn't make sense and I don't like for this finale.
The fact that Langston didn't just kill the hostage immediately when he got Reacher just made it like the plot protected them.
Also the fight inside the helicopter was pretty badly stage... a lot of standing around and those 2 being strapped the whole time made it kinda hilarious. Also that Reacher made a tom cruise scene just made it toooo over the top.
Also, why destroying the helicopter with those 2 people inside...? It just leave a bad taste in my mouth. I can understand the reason for the scientist but for the helicopter guy... he didn't even partake in the fight...
Definitely could be better. I like the group. Neagley is amazing and them losing those friends was also emotional for me...
Totally Killer (2023)
It's actually really funny
I enjoyed it. I thought it'll be another dumb movie (it is kinda dumb) but it is a great addition to the slasher genre.
Also the fact that the 80s girls are like a callback to mean girls group is funny af. I can't get the Plastic's walking song out of my head when the girls were first introduced.
Kieran (aka Sabrina) did a good job. I miss her Sabrina and I wished her tv show was a lot more better because I really enjoyed her performance in here.
A lot of callback and like just wtf moments are really good. I don't even mind the weird time travel moments, the exposition at the was just meh though, but the action was good.
Unfrosted (2024)
It is funny but could be better
I think they can crank up the comedy even more but also shortened the length of the movie.
There was some stupid and funny moments that got a laugh out of me, but the overtly complicated detour / story kinda made it meh...
Do love a lot of cameo (especially you James Marsden. Always in my heart) but yeah story wise and overall things could definitely be better. Like the other guys where it has a lot of memorable, out of there scenes with a simple but also cohesive plot.
I think overall the actors are all ok. Hugh Grant as a shakespeare wanna be actor ended up playing as a mascot.. such a Hugh Grant thing to do nowadays.
Bodkin (2024)
I want to love it
But in the end, I could barely finish this thing.
The overall vibe reminded me of Hot Fuzz with Only Murders in the Building.
I've been a fan of Only Murders since s1 and was hoping this show to be pretty good. It is said to be a dark comedy but it didn't feel like it most of the time.
I also sense some Hot Fuzz vibe out of it but maybe it is because of the setting. I would honestly love it more if it was like Hot Fuzz too.
I think it was just too slow and not that interesting. I got lost in the overall plot and was too lazy to backtrack to catch up with it in the end.
So yeah... it was just another meh series for me.
Rebel Moon - Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness (2024)
It's a comedy
Guess if you stop taking it seriously and started to look at it as a comedy, it is pretty funny.
Set of live musicians to serenade your assassination work, amazing. The fact that they know where to hold their notes and up their strings for more suspense during such live scene showed how professional these musicians are and what a commitment they have to their art.
The harvesting scene that could double as an advertisement for schewepps, amazing. Should get in touch with that company for extra money.
Bloody passing around their backstory around the table, hell yeah... shortcut way on giving these forgettable characters some backstory.
And omg, using grains around their houses as their defense, 10/10 strategy, too bad they didn't attach the grains onto their body instead.
I'm still waiting for more shirtless scene in slow mo.
Shiti Hanta (2024)
Probably won't watch it twice
I want to love it because I do enjoyed the original City Hunter and the Jackie Chan's movie (I'm watching it right now again).
City Hunter was huge back in the 80s and 90s. The pervy part of Ryo came from that era (these pervy protagonist probably won't work anymore in the current era), and even though he is pervy, he is actually great at his works and kind.
I think the casting choice for Ryo was really good. He nailed the character and his body was great lol. I enjoyed the Mokkori scene. The comedy was great too but I felt let down by the overall production.
I wanted it to have more artistic side of it, especially in its colour and cinematography. The opening scene was great, that part where Ryo used the soapy land cushion was funny af, but after that, it felt like a B movie production, especially during the cosplay scenes.
The action sequence and the bullet shooting was great. It didnt have to be so realistic, but I just wish the cinematography was more interesting. It just felt like a normal Japanese drama instead of a great production. Should have looked at how the Korean did on Parasyte Grey. The colour palette was at least something different.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith: First Date (2024)
OMG STOP TEXTING
These "operative agents" are so dumb...
I love donald glover since his time in community and with his music career, but I just can't with this stupid script.
From the beginning, it was already so bad... the two on the run agents suddenly changing their mind, not even having some booby traps secured, etc. And how did the first person even die!? Shot from where and why the bullets didnt keep coming too as soon as the other agent went out the door.
AND OMG... the THEATER SCENE. IT GOT MY BLOOD BOILING. FREAKING HIDE YOUR PHONE AT LEAST. OR TEXT WITHOUT BLOODY LOOKNG AT YOUR PHONE. AS SOMEONE WHO HAD TEXT ALOT. YOU KNOW WHERE THE KEYBOARD IS WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING. TRY IT, I DARE YOU! Plus she is a professional! Not only it is rude but also DRAW ATTENTION TO YOURSELF! OR FREAKING USE AN OLD PHONE SINCE NEW PHONE HAS THE CHANCE OF BEING HACK AS WELL.
Gen V: Guardians of Godolkin (2023)
Watchable
Improvement from the last 2 episodes but also like, maybe they ran out of budget lol.
Guess it is bit hard to have a good fighting scene with these many powers, but lol to that "get to the helicopter scene" because inside was on fire... but the building behind them wasn't lol.
I get what they wanted to do with the story line but like, in the end, marie also murder people and didnt feel traumatic at all... the trauma got shifted to blowing cate's hand.
But damn Homelander looks good. Love you Anthony.
Well, we shall see if s2 will be good / better. Rest in peace Andre though... Ive watched you in Sabrina and really love the character Ambrose, least in s1 before the story went meh as well.
Gen V: Welcome to the Monster Club (2023)
Felt rushed
I feel like it started out great but like... they started to rush it by this episode...
Things felt super jarring after Marie found the tracker in her shoulders. She rushed to Cate and the conversation just felt awkward. And she changed clothes after? And like Jordan was able to see the injury immediately after? And Marie was able to sense the tracker inside Jordan despite having her memory wipes? Is this a sign of her power growing but it wasn't even touched again after...
Like... it was just so painful to watch. Felt like they could have a smoother pace or something instead of what we were presented with.
Fallout (2024)
Great season 1
Do hope this series will get another season. I never play the game but do know bout bits and pieces of the lore (thank you video essay) and this series is very entertaining and well done.
The story is engaging. Simple and yet amazingly well put. The violence is very... violent. Over the top, lots of gruesome stuffs that made me look away from the screen or just cringe, but like it fits the wasteland and the situation they are in.
Theres only an editing error or like splicing (?) that doesn't make sense and put me out of the story, but other than that, I enjoyed every minute of it. Kinda sad that the s1 is finish and who knows when the next season will be out.
I like the characters. Lucy is very nice as a protagonist. She started as someone who is quite naive because of her upbringing to become a survivor without truly losing herself.
I love the ghoul character, though it reminded me so much of that character in westworld.
I also love the musics and the retro 60s aesthethic contrasted with apocalypse. Always something I enjoyed to see from the fallout games.
Also big shout to the best girl, the doggo. Cx404 / Dogmeat, you are amazing.
Road House (2024)
Boring...
I had like high expectation for this... was expecting some high action fun movie but like... not much going on? For a movie that is advertised with like adrenaline filled action movie, this movie is actually quiet boring.
Jake was fine... the boss's son was fine... the owner of the roadhouse was fine... the er doctor love interest was a snooze with like wtf background for some drama I guess...
I need more action, more violence... bloody fallout has more action and fun scenes compared to this.
The crocs scene was funny af and unexpected... but yeah.. I found myself bored trying to watch this movie and its not a good... its so bad, its so good kind of movie...
The Descendants (2011)
I love this movie
I thought I would get bored of it but honestly, I never got bored of rewatching this movie.
It's such a well done slice of life movie. Lots of beautiful and emotional moments, especially as it's dealing with loss.
The characters are relatable and just feel real, like any other family. It also gave us a nice scenery of Hawaii.
George Clooney is amazing in this movie. Such nice subtle performance. Shailene Woodley is also amazing. All of the casts are really good.
It is such a simple story, started from an accident that changes everyone' lives. It's such a well done movie basically. I still got teary, especially as you get older and relate more to the stories.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Good even without sound
I watched this first in the airplane. Being too lazy to even put my headphone on, the movie was captivating even without sound and I feel like it is saying something.
I was never a big fan of the first top gun. I only know some bits and pieces and so I was amazed at myself for really loving this movie.
Well crafted and shoot, the flying scene is amazing. I think the actors flew for real too. It has everything going for it, an emotional turmoil characters, adrenaline filled action, and just captivating sceneries too.
I think the plot is paper thin.. especially the macguffin on why they are doing it, but it is an entertaining movie that I felt reflected tom cruise's (another) golden era. This movie and the mission impossible that was released around the same time were amazing.
Sisu (2022)
Just throw away your logic
Good things the soldiers have bad aim.
It is an action pack movie but like... the enemies are freaking dumb and have really bad aim.
I do feel sorry for the horse... they always died in these kind of movies but thankfully the dog is alright.
I think... thats about it. The plot is simple and like some scenes are too gory for me...
I would probably like it more if the enemies are smarter and have better aim lol.
But it is a semi watchable movie, like a mix between John Wick and the Revenant style, maybe. But yeah... these soldiers with such large ammunition and such bad aim and stupidity, especially at the last scenes. Thankfully this really bad aim saved the dog.
Ripley (2024)
Beautiful cinematography
But that's about it.
I love Andrew Scott but he is too old for this series and doesn't even look like Dickie, which makes the plot even more thinner.
I never read the book but I watched the Talented Mr. Ripley movie and compared to that, this series is a letdown despite the total length of 8 episodes and the beautiful set pieces.
First of all, despite its length, I never got the chemistry between Dickie and Tom. They never became best friends and Dickie is just... so bland (especially compared to the character played by Jude Law). The highly anticipated boat scene became wtf for me for its sheer stupidity. Maybe if the point was to show how stupid and naive Dickie was, then it worked 100%.
Also, there is just some unrealistic / bad followed up scenes. Like Tom got super wet but then he appeared to be very dry in the next scene, or the clean up scenes where you would have thought there would be some implication considering how awful Tom is at cleaning up his own mess, but it never happened.
Don't know... I guess I was expecting something more but Tom appeared to win because the writer wrote him to win, not because of his own wit (much like the movie).
Oh, music is really good though. And the cat.
The Other Guys (2010)
Classic Comedy
This is my all time favourite movie. Much like Mean Girls, there are a lot of iconic moments and lines - I still love the "I'm a Peacock, you gotta let me fly!" line and the wooden gun.
Eva Mendes is amazing in this movie, both on her looks and also her character. The fact that Will Ferrel is a Gator (and a pimp) is hilarious.
The endless TLC reference with Michael Keaton, comedy gold.
Everything about this movie is just hilarious and iconic. Good advertisement for Prius too.
This is also Mark Walhberg greatest movie. Love him in this movie and the ballet scene. Just a lot of opposite trope that is usually in these action movie. "These poles are horizontal." Lol.
A must watch for sure.
Damsel (2024)
Barely watchable.
I think I already got angry and disappointed at the beginning of the movie. They know what they dealing with and they just brought that kind of army?
I dont even think this movie is for kids because it is too gory for them. There are a lot more blood and injuries than I expected.
The cgi is .. kinda a mess. Millie is alright but I dont particularly fond of the character. I like angela basset character the most, despite her lack of appearance. Im also surprised the love simon guy is there, as well as robin wright.
And man... I do feel bad for the dragon. Especially when you consider the plot. Kinda unfair but then that ending was cringe... like urgh and the lack of attention to detail at millie's injury. It irked me.
Thanksgiving (2023)
I love it
Honestly, I came in with low expectation and was surprised to see Patrick Dempsey in it.
The movie was fun. Im not a big fan of gory horror slasher genre but this movie was actually pretty good. Some stuffs are super gore (for me) and I think the production probably has a lot of fun making these.
The comedies are gold. The opening section was so out there that I love it. It's just enough of that believable stupid gore to continue the plot.
I did semi guessed the culprit in the end because he's just that popular. But overall it's a good slasher genre. Fun and not overtly stupid. The dialogue is actually really good. Balancing well enough of the campiness and silly one liner.
Spaceman (2024)
Abstract and Surreal
I am glad that this kind of movie was still being made. Yes it is confusing, and slow... but I feel like it is the point.
The cinematography is interesting, the story is mind bending. It is straight forward but filled with its moments and emotions. Tender feeling of love and separation. It is a star crossed love story despite them being married.
There is a lot to digest and to enjoy. I am glad to just be on the ride and watching this kind boogling a movie.
Paul Dano's voice is soothing and I am happy I have no arachnophobia.
The cgi was good enough. There was some fishy stuffs but it is alright.
It is weird looking at Adam Sandler playing such role. I do feel he might be slightly miscasted for this movie but he is great in it. Carey Mulligan was also wonderful.
