The Path of the Shadows (2018)
An eye-opening story that displays the consequences of war
Based on a sequence of true events, The Path of Shadows is an emotional, yet, intimidating film that talks about the horrors of war and its consequences. The film is a sincere memoir from an innocent man who became a victim to one of many tragedies that took place in the El Salvador civil war.
The viewers get to notice how someone as honourable as a teacher suddenly gets kidnapped as a result of suspicion from the government for taking part in anti-state rebellions. At this particular point, director Baltazar Lopez does quite well in quickly introducing its viewers to the main characters, marking a distinct line between the protagonist and antagonists in the film.
Supporting the director with his immense skills in Oscar Suncin who plays the character of Carlos Mauricio. Oscar's performance is a phenomenal one that simply cannot be ignored. The events of the sequence along with Oscar's realistic facial expressions holds enough intensity to bring the viewers to tears.
The Path of Shadows is an eye-opener for all those who blatantly support the act of war without knowing its results. It explicitly portrays the merciless and inhumane killings, thereby uncovering the true nature of human beings in the process as well.
Overall, the film, in all its brilliance, is coherent, inevitably keeping all its viewers glued to their screens from the beginning till the very end.
What Death Leaves Behind (2018)
Outstandingly unique
'What Death Leaves Behind' is a psychological drama film released in 2018. The film focuses on the life of a man named Jake Warren who recently undergoes a kidney transplant surgery. The aftereffects of the procedure leads him to experience nightmares about the murder of his donor. Consequently, Jake goes out on a journey that leads him to a dark reality related to both, himself and the killer in his visions.
'What Death Leaves Behind' is an emotional and traumatic film that discusses the story of a father, husband, and a friend whose life, ironically, begins to tear apart after receiving treatment. One of the main features represented in this film is the mental pressure that Jake goes through which leads him to devour his own peace of mind. Through Jake's attempts and struggles, the film highlights mental health distress calls and how they are casually ignored by everyone around him. In different parts of the sequences, Jake tries to explain the enigma to his co-worker as well as his business partner but instead of helping him and listening to his concerns, both of them directly or indirectly dismiss his claims. Eventually, Jake's illness completely takes over, inevitably destroying his marriage as well as his professional life.
In addition to the solid plot, what makes 'What Death Leaves Behind' standout is its brilliant cast. Khalil McMillan proves his acting skills once again by his outstanding performance in a completely unpredictable film. His expressions throughout the sequence maintain coherence. In the beginning, he exquisitely portrays himself as a strong individual who believes he has the patience to overcome these visions. It is not until the latter part of the sequence that he begins to struggle with his condition. The final act is what truly brings out the talent in McMillan's acting by giving out subtle yet, serene expressions.
Overall, 'What Death Leaves Behind' is truly one of a kind. It consists of an extremely well thought out plot, topped with some of the most natural acts viewers can get to see. The film is unpredictably amazing!
Stalked (2018)
Amazing series with an intense and accurate story line!
'Stalked' is a thriller web series produced and directed by Jaimy Homberg. The talented all-rounder is back once again with his new series called 'Stalked'. The series features a talented cast consisting of Jaimy Homberg himself, Myrna Laanen, and Billy Twomey. The story consists of a young boy named Finn who, along with his best friend Olivia, goes out camping for the weekend. During the night however, Finn and Olivia experience weird sounds emerging from outside which they choose to ignore. The next day, Finn receives threat calls from an anonymous number after which he discusses with his Olivia. Olivia manages to calm Finn down but despite that, Finn is attacked once again after the stalker manages to enter his house and set it on fire, whereas abducting Olivia at the same time. Finn must now set out to rescue her friend while also confronting his stalker.
'Stalked' is a brilliant web series which is unique in its own entirety. The series has been very well directed by Jaimy Homberg as it portrays a completely different story which keeps the viewers glued to their seats. The series on a whole is full of emotions as it provides happiness, sorrow, and most importantly, genuine jump scares. Jaimy himself does an incredible job in playing the character of Finn. His adaptability to acting and portraying versatile roles has always been admired. This time, Jaimy plays a young enthusiastic Finn who cares for all of his friends and family. Supporting him, is the lovely Myrna Laanen who does a marvellous job in portraying Olivia. The character of Olivia is perfectly executed as her innocence and goodwill for her best friend Finn makes it almost impossible to predict her inner state of mind! Next, we have Billy Twomey who plays Finn's very supportive and loving boyfriend, Jim. The cast, overall, does very well to play it cool and natural throughout the series!
One of the best things about this series is that it's not a cliché. The storyline is not stretched in any way like in most serials and the ending holds a great plot twist that personally I could never have guessed. Keeping the intensity intact, the background music by MKG arts also synchronizes accordingly to the moment, making the viewers experience a wide range of emotions.
All in all, the series is great. The standards had been set quite high for Jaimy after pulling off an amazing movie like 'The Dolls', but as always, the young director and actor has done an amazing job. Looking forward to watch season 2!
The Dolls (2018)
Exceptional film! Very different and intriguing all at the same time!
'The Dolls' is an action-packed thriller film that brings us the story of a young girl, name Ally, who discovers that she is being framed by people who look just like her. The story revolves around her trying to find out and stop whoever is committing these heinous acts under her name.
The film is unique in its own kind as it brings its viewers a very enthralling story which constantly keeps the viewers in a suspense until the very end. The plot throughout is full of surprises and intense scenes particularly the part when we get to see Ally fighting one of her own doll versions as she ends up eventually shooting her look-alike down. Jaimy Homberg does a fantastic job portraying not just Ally but also her friend Sam along with the rest of the dolls. The versatility in acting is clearly seen if we compare Ally's traumatised expressions with her emotionless cold-hearted clones who don't think twice before committing a murder. Supporting Jaimy on the other end is the very talented Myrna Laanen, also known as Jessica, who exceptionally plays a vital role in comforting Ally in her time of need and helping her get to the bottom of this.
Overall, the film provides the audience with a mixture of numerous emotions such as surprise, anticipation and sadness. The film not only displays versatile acting skills but also a very twisted ending which leaves the viewers wanting more! All in all, the film is a must-watch particularly for those who love a good action-thriller film!
