Homeland (2011)
Serviceable Spy Thriller with Superior turns! AWESOME!
Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) & Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) 2011-2020.
The wars, fears, and their vengeance to right so many wrongs against America. The show will keep you wanting more as the brave soldiers and intelligence officers shed light on the rippling cost of years of fighting and catastrophizing; then the effect of all of it on the individuals mental health.
Saul is Carrie Mathison's mentor and frequent protector at the CIA. Saul is the backbone of the C.I.A, and Carrie's biggest supporter. He cares for her like a Father and truly wants the best for her. Saul proves early on he is both knowledgeable and wise; also the sole reason Carrie was able to get her job back at the CIA & continue her career and passion to protect the USA. Over the years we watch Saul make many decision that prove his characters dignity and conviction.
IMO: Season 1 was beyond thrilling and the best of this decade long series. As dicey as it can be to use actual mental illness as a symbol for national trauma, Carrie was a kind of synecdoche for a rattled America. She both fought the shadow war for us and felt it - more intensely so when she took the case of Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), an American prisoner of war turned by his captors into a sleeper agent, who became her target and her lover. Playing cat and mouse with Carrie, a bipolar intelligence officer. It was gripping, next-day water-cooler stuff that twisted and turned with every week.
But even in its weaker seasons, "Homeland" was bolstered by a commitment to nuance, in its politics and its characters. Danes's raw-nerve performance has been stunning throughout. Carrie's partnership with Saul has been one of TV's most complicated pairings; they've been mentor and pupil, peers, surrogate family, adversaries and uneasy allies, their interactions charged simultaneously with warmth and with a necessary professional chill.
Over the years, the show evolves its focus not just on America and the Islamic world but on crises within the West as well. In the most recent season, in 2018, Russian operatives launched a disinformation campaign that precipitated a constitutional crisis in the United States and ultimately led to the resignation of the president - as well as Carrie's capture by the Russians, who withheld the medication that had kept her stable. This setup brings "Homeland" full circle. Carrie, having sacrificed her sanity and even custody of her daughter, all in service of her mission to protect the USA.
