Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Better than Last Jedi by a mile
A lot of people complained about the similarities between this and the original but I thought it was kind of a fun ode but still its own sort of thing. After seeing the horrifically awful Last Jedi I think we can all agree this one looks even better in retrospect. JJ Abrams clearly loves it and you can feel that and I think it's pretty great.
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Enjoyed it
I really love Paul Rudd, and I think he makes the movie way better than it is. Him and Michael Pena, who steals all his scenes. Ant Man isn't my favorite, but I think it's better than the first one, and if you just go in looking for a good time you won't be disappointed.
Tub (2010)
Just great
This short is amazing because it's just so crazy. I can't remember how I was able to see it, but I love it. I didn't know what I was getting into but it was totally worth it. Anyone who loves absurd or funny B movies will absolutely love it, just like I did. Also, crazy original idea.
Star Trek (1966)
A classic
This is still one of the greatest shows to ever hit tv. It was deeper than a lot of stuff that was around then, and that lasts longer than production values ever will, even though the production values make me laugh, and I love that. The reason it stuck around is because it has big thoughts and big ideas, and that's worth more than any of that other stuff. It broke boundaries and pushed limits that don't seem like a big deal now, but were back then. I love Star Wars, but it's weird how much more recognition that gets than this.
The Wicker Man (2006)
This is funny
I don't get the hate for this movie, because I think a lot of the stuff in it is supposed to be funny, and I found it hilarious. The bike and the bear suit were just classic. I mean, people hate this movie but they talk about it a lot, and I think that says something for the movie. You remember it, and I think that's because it was actually made really well. It's always a good laugh for me. Just don't try and take it too seriously.
Devil's Cove (2018)
Surprisingly Funny
Okay, I HAD to see this movie when I read something about Ed Wood, and I gotta say it's pretty accurate. It's definitely not the best made movie or anything, but I think there's a lot of funny stuff in there that people overlook, like the part where they're all snorting cocaine with straws was amazing, and the lady who talks about killing herself made me laugh every single time, and the kid who was so excited to have sex with the girls because he's never had sex was great. It's campy and a little over the top, but I think that works with the way the film is made. I really hope this movie finds an audience, because B movie lovers like me would eat it up.
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
Quite possibly my favorite movie of all time
Okay, I am really excited to review this movie, because it might just be my favorite movie of all time. It's rare to see a movie that so perfectly balances compelling and downright B movie hilarity. Quentin Tarantino is a great writer, and Robert Rodriguez is the perfect director for a movie like this. George Clooney is great at being the rational center of the movie, and I think Tarantino wrote a perfect role for himself. I know he got a razzie nom, but I think that was just for people to hate on him, because this movie is SUPPOSED to be a little ridiculous. I love watching this movie with people who have no idea what it's about, and listening to them guess all the way to the point where Salma Hayek goes full vamp. Greatest response was from one of my friends who said "Well...that would make for some interesting dinner conversation." right after it happened. It just goes crazy, and I love every second of it.
Tusk (2014)
Different
So, it took me longer to see this one than I would have guessed, just because this type of movie is what I love, but what I saw was a little bit different than what I expected. I'm gonna check out Yoga Hosers soon, but as for this one: I liked it, and it was different than I expected which is really why I give it the high rating, because I also found that it dipped a bit in certain parts and around the halfway mark you start kind of wondering what exactly you're waiting around for because it feels like what you might worry about happening has already happened. Still, seeing Justin Long wail like that was pretty funny. Worth a watch, but maybe only one.
Zombeavers (2014)
Hilarious
Go in and have a good laugh with this one. John Mayer has an amazing cameo that starts the movie off just right, and it keeps it up from there. This is a near perfect movie for what it is. I'll always recommend it to anyone who likes B movies like me.
Annihilation (2018)
Strength is in the unknown
So, this is a movie that I'm sure will be known mostly as a "love it or hate it" type of movie, and I think that's pretty fair. I personally loved it, but that's because I really like things that have an air of mystery around them, and I feel like this entire movie does. It's slow for sure, especially in the middle a little bit, but the whole time I just had a lot of questions, and the ending of course was a pretty wild ride, but that's what I loved about it. My friends and I talked about the movie for a long time after we saw it, and then the next day, and then for about a week after that, just kind of debating what it was about and stuff. I think that makes it a great movie.
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! (1978)
A little slow and low on laughs
I absolutely love movies like this, silly B movies, but this one didn't strike me as well as a lot of them do. I just didn't find myself laughing as much as I normally do, or compelled if I wasn't laughing, or even really enjoying the premise as much as I normally do. Still, I sat through the whole thing and am taking the time to review it, so I guess a 6 will do. There's just better stuff out there.
Leprechaun (1992)
Just have fun
This is the type of movie you can't take too seriously. Just go in ready to laugh and you will. If you try and judge it by the same standards of Citizen Kane or something it's not gonna be very good, but if you just let yourself enjoy it you will.
Donnie Darko (2001)
I don't wanna be alone
I think my favorite thing about this movie is that I don't actually know everything going on. I feel like every time I watch it I see something different, or think something different. That's the strongest thing about the movie: it keeps you coming back to try and figure it out. I'm sure some people have figured it out enough, at least for themselves, but I really like the wonder.
