Surviving Death (2021)
Good and bad
The episode on reincarnation was thought provoking and offered credible evidence. As did episode 1 reviewing near death/outer body experiences
But I honestly couldn't tell whether episodes 2 and 3 were parodies or not!
They merely exposed mediums for the frauds that they are....one 'medium' asked an elderly gentleman 'so, your father has passed away hasn't he?' 'And he used to smoke right?' (True for pretty much every person over 75!) ....then in another session simply getting everything wrong!
Then there was the Dutch lady who obviously looked up her audience's details on Facebook, and the fact that the 'spirits' seem to be awfully chatty...yet cannot say their name or describe how they died?
I can only assume they put the episodes on the mediums in so that they could expose their lies.
The Visit (2015)
Haha...?
Had the urge to watch Mars attacks again after watching this. You'll know why when you see that part. And as much as I love my granny, I think I'll politely decline any offers to stop over.
Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Adventure (2022)
No excitement, just nostalgia.
I didn't grow up in 1960s Houston. I grew up in 1980s Newcastle Upon Tyne. So a rather different environment.
However, I was still taken in by the more nostalgic theme. I don't know why but for some reason its fun to relate events in a movie to your own youth.
Like falling asleep in the back of the car and waking up in my bed, making prank calls (at least until '1471' was brought to our attention), comically sadistic teachers, brutal but awesome playground games, being blissfully unaware of any environmental hazard (breathing in smoke from a gigantic bonfire all day in your mate's garden) , daft TV programs, playing 40-a-side football in the street, my Nana visiting with her 'views', obscure board games, 6 hour games of monopoly, disappointing packed lunches...and so on.
There is in fact not much of a story to this movie, just an opportunity to forget the worries of the present and remember that you had a youth, stuff happened, and you survived. The 'kid going to the moon' was very much a side story.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
Totally bonkers Western medley
Well I rather enjoyed all that! I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it. A nod to Tarantino perhaps (or maybe only me who thought that?).
Then just when it starts getting even more daft, Finchy from The Office shows up!
It's beautifully filmed and I love the way that the appearance of some characters in the Coen brothers movies seems more exaggerated, almost cartoon like.
Buster Scruggs' 'Water' echoing from the canyon walls at the very start...it's stuck in my head now! I love the little touches like that in films.
Right, I'm off now to watch old episodes of The Office...
