Land of Bad (2024)
6.5 average is about reasonable
I've gone for 7 *'s as this film is definitely above a 6. If you want a realistic military film - give this one a wide berth. If you want a reasonable action film that has some decent tension in places and some cool explosions, switch off your brain and enjoy. That's not meant as a criticism. Some films are intended to just be fun action films. The 80s was jam packed with them. Land of Bad is more Commando than Black Hawk Down. It has plenty of cheesy clichés. A lot of military procedural inaccuracies. But mostly lots of stuff blowing up and generally being a bit frenetic and exciting. It does the job and doesn't warrant the hate from people who thought they were going to watch a military documentary.
Page Eight (2011)
A well paced, low frills, UK spy movie
At first I wondered whether the script writing was bad, but the good reviews lead me to believe this must just be how oxbridge toffs speak to each other. I stuck with it and found a reasonable film that is interesting and engaging. The cast is good and the subject matter is low key enough to be believable, but also relatable (because it's simply true to life). In late 2023 the tie in with the war crimes of certain "allies" is prescient, but I guess also fairly predictable, given the countries cited.
At this point I'm just filling the minimum character limit, but to repeat myself - an entertaining watch that, if low action realism is your thing, you won't regret seeing.
