Midsomer Murders: The Blacktrees Prophecy (2022)
Deja-vu?
Have enjoyed these from the start - even when the death toll went past 300 and some form of official enquiry would surely have been launched!
However, watching this first murder reminded me of the Death in Paradise episode with exactly the same demise. Other aspects of the story were also similar...
Generating antagonism between the main characters doesn't help either - Fleur is becoming a pain - and Barnaby's virtually abusive treatment of his sidekick simply would not be allowed.
And man-traps are illegal, but no action was taken on that.
As such this was a disappointing entry in the series.
The Marlow Murder Club (2024)
Quaint variation on the theme...
As ever, suspend belief that 'civilians' would be allowed to involve themselves in a Police controlled murder investigation, but this is a really good variation on the "murder mystery solved by amateurs" genre. Good characterisation and enough clues and half truths to keep it interesting. A few places where you want to shout "No, don't do that!" at the screen, but then, if they did the sensible thing, the story would only last half an hour.
Great location shots - but... I have to say, having often travelled through Marlow High Street, especially early on a Sunday morning, I can state categorically that it is never that empty during any day of the week!!!
Occupation: Rainfall (2020)
Ignore the nay-sayers!
Considering the dross that is out there, from Asylum and the like - all shot in the one room and costing about £50 on a good day - I cannot for the life of me understand the low ratings and rubbish some of these reviews are spouting for this film!
This is a great film, drops you straight in the action and never lets up. Cinematography is excellent compared to the Asylum garbage. Effects are really good, as is the alien make up. Yes, the dialogue is typical and often cliched - but for goodness sake it's an alien invasion film - what do you want - Shakespeare???
This is a great film to sit down with a beer and some chips and just enjoy... ignore the nay- sayers!
True Lies: Independent Dependents (2023)
Heading downhill, rapidly...
I can see why this has been cancelled... the original film was action and adventure, with the sudden reveal of Harry's "reality". With that dealt with in the first episode, the only ones it is hidden from are the kids, and that's not enough, so the True Lies are limp...
Consequently without the major hook to hang the story on, it has now degenerated into a touchy freely, solving everyone's angst, style soap opera, with a few explosions and shoot outs every now and then... Not what a covert operations squad would do!
And a real covert operative would not have claustrophobia - that would have been a straightforward rejection from training..
Midsomer Murders: For Death Prepare (2021)
The Police would not act like that!
Oh dear... whilst we once again had long drawn out twists and turns, as expected, as we try to find the killer first, the final rescue was woeful!
The height of the axe was easily within reach, so the first act of any police officer would be to secure the lethal weapon... not spend minutes faffing about untying the potential victim... clearly ridiculous, as had they not succeeded in getting him ou he would have been killed which could have easily been prevented and they would be on charges for incompetence.
Please writers, be sensible about things like that - there are way to many really stupid faults becoming commonplace in these programs.
9-1-1: Lone Star: A Bright and Cloudless Morning (2022)
When will writers talk to the experts?
What could have been a great episode (the building rescue) was let down by people not checking with an expert on the structural design involved with concrete... beams and slabs shown with little or no reinforcing steel. The beams would have cages with numerous large bars and cross links into the columns, not one at each corner!!! The slabs would have at least one or two lattices of steel, not plain concrete!!! Absolutely ridiculous... if you are going to have 'serious incidents' in such shows at least get the elements right. As the goof comment says, not only did the 'concrete' move like styrofoam, it even looked like styrofoam... real concrete weighs 2.4 tonnes per cubic yard (150lb per cubic foot) you don't shove beams around like candyfloss. Such a pity when people don't do their research...
Harrow: Ex Animo (2018)
When will writers talk to experts?
The body is encased in cement NOT concrete.
Concrete consists of cement and aggregates - the culprit simply sift a bag of cement over the body.
This would have set into a weak solid but not with a shiny surface and certainly not as hard as rock.
The reacting cement would have been very alkaline and would have burned skin and tissue that touched it.
Concrete, or cement (two different materials) can be very useful murder props, but please talk to an expert about how it works first...
Iron Fist: Immortal Emerges from Cave (2017)
So slow...
Other fights in this series have been pretty fair - though the incredible variation in Danny's skill is laughable. Tremendous one moment, absolutely pathetic the next.
The first fight scene - to the death and all that - was excruciatingly slow, almost like they'd been told to move in slow motion.
Sad, had great potential, but no wonder it was canned...
SEAL Team: Boarding Party (2017)
Absurdity in bucketloads...
Apart from the fact that the team leader has obvious psychological problems and would not be fit for duty, where do they get the storylines from? A research ship, shown to be in the middle of nowhere in the ocean, is suddenly boarded by bad guys. Said bad guys have managed to approach, board and run around the ship, without anyone noticing from the bridge???
Please at least try and have some level of sensibility...
