The Wheel of Time (2021)
A dull slog of a series
I have not read the books, so I do not have that to work by. But, I was sold and interesting, well woven story by the initial trailer. I was sorely disappointed. There are so many things that I utterly despised about this series.
Let's start with the one thing I did like. Visually it looks pretty decent. Shoot locations are often stunning and the visual effects are pretty decent for show of it's nature.
The largest issue for me, besides the lack of coherent story telling is the lack of character in the characters. It almost seems as though whomever was in charge of casting, simply did not even look at the actors files or bother to do any screenings of their auditions (if there were any). The entire cast was so poorly cast.
I have seen such wooden, soulless performance only a few times before. This series is so dull it feels as though the producers hired Neil Breen to write the dialogue. Hollywood needs to start hiring actors on their resume and ability rather than their looks. This show is like a bunch of catwalk models were pulled off the stage and told to act with no training.
I see that there is a second season on its way. I truly hope that the producers have put in the leg work to make the second series better. And for the book fans, I hope that the next season honours the source materials more. I had a similar experience with Rings of Power where the producers all but defocated all over Tolkien's work to bring a hodgepodge, poorly written piece of agenda-laden excrement to the screen, and had the audacity to label it as Tolkien-inspired.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Children of the Comet (2022)
Shining a long awaited light on Uhura
Once again Strange New Worlds delivers. An excellent episode with more focus on a character other than the captain. We learn some really meaty background info for Nyota Uhura that we never got to learn in TOS. Kudos to the writers. The show continues to exhibit the heart that made Star Trek the brand it is today. I can't write any further, for fear of getting too excited and spoiling the Episode for other who have not yet been able to see it.
The Invisible Man (2020)
A wasted opportunity
When I first saw the trailer for this film, I was cautiously optomistic about its potential. Then I watched it. And everything changed.
The opening few scenes and escape weren't bad. But, it only went downhill from there. Secondary characters that had nothing of importance to do in the film, forced conflict between character we know too little about to give a crap. And one incredibly stupid decision by the main character that could have brought the whole story to an end long before it did.
The invisibility suit effects were pretty good however, and that is pretty much this films only redeeming quality, that and the dog (I love dogs) are the only reasons this film even gets the 2 stars I have given it.
If you have a mind for logic, and any need for intelligent characters, give this one a miss.
