Chief Daddy (2018)
In death we deal.
Chief Beecroft is an industrial billionaire who dies in his dining room at his table. Days after, his lawyer shows up with an invitation to his family to read his codicil before his will. The family includes his daughters from his first wife, his second wife and their son.....and his three mistresses WITH there children, along with a son NO ONE knew about. The codicil reads that EVERYONE should stay in the family home and prepare his funeral. If they get to fighting and leave, NOTHING will be left to anyone. This film was funny, and it would probably been funnier to me if the accents weren't so thick while talking so fast. I kept trying to decipher so many times and just let it go and let the film move on. Still, it was a pleasant flick and I totally enjoyed it.
Peppermint (2018)
Revenge is a candy best served dead.
Riley's husband is into something drastic with his best friend and setting up a plan to rob the cartel. The husband backs out, and the best friend is killed. Now, the cartel has gunned down the husband, daughter & Riley. When Riley is able to come thru and decides to take it to court, the courts decided to use her medical history against her and let the killers go. Five years later, Riley's back, and so is her thirst for vengeance. The state's law is one thing. Riley's law is another, and the killers and the cartel would have been a lot healthier had they not follow the corrupt law to the letter. Jennifer Garner gave me the movie to watch during a lackluster weekend. Total bad to the bone and I LOVED IT!!!
Widows (2018)
A debt owed.
Harry & Veronica Rawlings are married and seem to be happy. Harry also is the head of a four man robbery team that had been successful in the past. The latest robbery got them killed. They were robbing a drug dealer when they were cornered by the police and their van exploded, along with the 2 million stolen. The drug dealer's head was Jamal Manning, who is also running for Alderman for the city. Now, with the money destroyed, Jamal confront Veronica with a proposal: Get me 2 million to replace the destroyed case and you get to live. They also have the names of the wives of the dead husbands. Now, Veronica must gather the nerve to collect the wives and create a team to rob the only one with enough influence and money....the home of Alderman in running, Jack Mulligan. Jamal's opponent. I was caught for the 2 hours of planning, obsessing, frayed nerves...ALL OF IT! The biggest shocker was in the form of, what had to be, the ULTIMATE betrayal that I NEVER saw coming. All in all, this was a pretty good flick that, if you had the time, would be well worth the watch!
Cobra Kai (2018)
Karate thirty years later.
Thirty years after THE KARATE KID II, time hasn't been lucky or fortunate to Johnny Lawrence. Bouncing from one dead end job to another, his attitude being his biggest detriment, and having a delinquent son with his "quick to come up on a man's dime" ex-wife. Daniel LaRusso, on the other hand, went on to own and run his company of selling luxury cars, and his other life is with wife, lazy son and follower daughter. The moral of this first season: Time marches on, but grudges stand still. The best part of this series is that both Johnny & Daniel are EXACTLY the personalities that I would have expected them to have after all these years gone by, and when the children are thrown in the mix, rivalries are renewed, jealousies are reborn, and, thanks to the students at large, a larger than expected amount of comedy is poured in, making this a series that is long in the making and can't wait for Season 2!
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
More than the rain comes down.
October 1989. 43 children are born at the same time, which is odd since the mothers weren't pregnant the day before. Sir Reginald Hargreeves locate the mothers and offer money for their children. 7 accept. Now, growing up in the mansion, they train to battle crime, and possibly, the end of the world. As teens, they trained and bickered and split up. Now, after father's death, they have regrouped, and bought their baggage with them. Among the returning fighting and bickering, they must contend with the secrets father and staff continue to hold, time traveling assassins and...oh yeah....the apocalypse. Now that Netflix have given up on the best in their line-up, meaning the Marvel titles, this offering turns out to an excellent replacement! It took two days to watch all 10 episodes and I can't wait until the second season arrives...ESPECIALLY after how the first season ended! DIGGIN'!!!
Shadow (2019)
THIS is a "SHADOW" you DON'T want trailing behind you.
The main character, Shadow, is a vigilante who goes after the bad guys with a vengeance. The vengeance part is that they don't last...as in living. His body is altered, thanks to a lighting strike as a child, and his distrust in the system is justified, especially now with what's going on now. The stories were crisp and got right down to the point. Shadow was a living battery...not stopping until justice was served. Sister Nola was the perfect foil and totally loved best friend Max. He was the ying to Shadow's yang, which made them the perfect best friends. REALLY want to see a second season of this, the first South African series submitted to NETFLIX!
The Invitation (2015)
Not every "INVITATION" was meant to be accepted.
Will & Kira are accepting an invitation to David's ex-wife, Eden, and her new husband David's dinner party. Will & Eden lost a son years before and Will is still in his feelings. Upon arriving, Eden is a bit...off, yet the party goes on. Some dude arrives and the party turns a bit...ominous. The party continues and it becomes clear to me why they were there. The party continues and the lightheartedness become lethal. Gotta admit...I really dug this flick. The best part is that this movie relied on the slow burn method. Nothing was rushed for the sake of getting to the exciting parts. It took it's time, and me, to get to the exciting parts, and I was so grateful.
ReMastered: The Two Killings of Sam Cooke (2019)
From a documentary to a conspiracy.
Sam Cooke was killed 4 months after I was born, so the only thing that I knew about him was my fav, YOU SEND ME, and his other songs came after that. Watching this was interesting to me. Him being raised in a gospel family and joining a gospel group, only to leave and go secular and make it big time...he did his thing. It was fear of losing EVERYTHING that he had built and his vices that not only caught up to him, but got him killed...or so we're told. According to this, there is the truth told to the public and several alternatives that not many thought of, but still held in regard. VERY interesting. It was a documentary that was a long time coming and I'm glad that my buddy told me about it and had me jump on board.
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018)
Almost like working a 9 to 5.
The story itself was cool enough, but it was the interactive play was the issue. I applaud BLACK MIRROR creating this and when I started, it was cool. However, as it went along, choosing which way to go almost seemed like it was a test. If I chose the wrong way to go, the show would find a way to take me back to correct it. In some areas, it actually stalled, and I had to back up using BROWSE. When it took me back to where I left off, it stalled again. So much that I had to close the NETFLIX window, walk away, come back and restart it, and take a chance. This was like working a job and it took me two days to complete it. If MIRROR create another show like this one, then I'M OUT! I'll enjoy all the other shows, but will bypass anymore like this.
