Doctor Who: Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror (2020)
Pretty good
Enjoyed this episode quite a bit.
Very important historical stuff and fun and exciting plot.
The Doctor and the companions were quite good as well!
Doctor Who: Orphan 55 (2020)
An exercise in bad writing 101
This episode bang off the heels of an actually good episode of Doctor Who, something that's pretty hard to find these days.
However, this is a return to the tell-don't-show, concept killing, character underusing ways of series 11.
A highly interesting science fiction concept has been ruined by a writer who seems unable to utilise any nuance or proper intrigue.
Never mind
Doctor Who: Spyfall: Part One (2020)
Series 12 begins in style, improving on the failures of series 11
On virtually every front, this episode improves upon the failures of series 11.
The three companions are more dynamic and nuanced, feel more important to the story, and are generally given more time to shine.
The monsters are more threatening and interesting.
And of course, the Doctor feels more... like the Doctor. Whittaker still hasn't been given the opportunity to establish herself as the character with a fantastic moment like all previous Doctors have, but she's definitely getting there.
The twist is also surprising and genuinely exhilarating and the end to the episode is interesting and leaves a desire to keep watching.
Let's just hope Chibnall keeps at this quality or even gets better and this series may well be worthy of the title of Doctor Who.
Doctor Who: Resolution (2019)
Doctor Who's good again
Finally. Jodie Whittaker gets the balance of fun and energetic and commanding and serious down to a tee. All the companions offer depth to the story and even Yaz doesn't feel like much of a spare part. The sub plot of Ryan and his dad is slow and detracts from the thrilling action of the main storyline, but is interesting and the performances from both actors are superb. The Daleks are used inventively and are genuinely terrifying. Overall, the writing is just much better and Whittaker finally feels like the Doctor. The way she confronts and talks to the Dalek is fantastic; you get a real sense of her hatred and disdain for it, while keeping hope that she and her companions will defeat it, an attitude to fighting the Daleks that is quite fresh and new and fits with the personality of this Doctor well. Even the humour works! To me, this was finally a good, possibly even great, episode of Doctor Who and it at last feels like Chibnall's got the hang of things and that Whittaker has settled into the iconic role.
