Shōgun is a limited series no more: FX is gearing up for more installments of the historic drama.
The renewal was expected and foreshadowed by star-producer Hiroyuki Sanada closing a deal to continue as Lord Yoshii Toranaga. Also back are co-creators, executive producers and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo as well as EP Michaela Clavell.
For now, FX and streaming partner Hulu are saying that they are working with the estate of Shōgun author James Clavell to to develop two additional seasons.
There is no mention of a green light, and a start date for production has not been set, but a writers’ room is being assembled and will begin this summer. Studio 8G is going dark for two weeks as Late Night with Seth Meyers takes an extended two-week break starting Monday.
Meyers’ will be the only in-season show to take off next week. If this feels a bit like déjà vu, it may be because Meyers returned from another extended break just three weeks ago.
While he won’t be producing new episodes of Late Night, Meyers won’t likely be lounging on the beach, as he’s got a plate full of extracurriculars.
In addition to regularly performing standup (he’s set to tape his second comedy special this June), he hosts a podcast with his brother Josh called Family Trips with the Meyers Brothers and another podcast with The Lonely Island called The Lonely Island & Seth Meyers Podcast.
He also co-created the Emmy nominated IFC series Documentary Now, and wrote the 2022 childrens book “I’m Not Scared, You’re Scared,...

When showrunner John Orloff took on the task of turning historian Donald L. Miller’s “Masters of the Air” into a series for Apple TV+, one task was paramount: putting the audience in the shoes of the Air Force pilots whose World War II exploits were documented in Miller’s book. “We all know what infantry combat looks like,” Orloff told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “We haven’t really seen what these air bomber combat missions were really like.” Knowing that authenticity, both in terms of historical detail and visceral emotional experience, would be key, Orloff turned to visual effects supervisor Stephen Rosenbaum to bring the era and action to life. Although Rosenbaum is known for his groundbreaking work in the fantasy realm on films like James Cameron’s “Avatar,” for “Masters of the Air,” he adhered strictly to reality.

Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
Three seasons into “Bridgerton,” fans of the Regency drama are used to the sweeping romances filled with everything hot and heavy — banter, drama, and above all else sex. Every season has had its “diamond”—Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) in Season 1, Edwina (Charithra Chandran) in Season 2, Francesca (Hannah Dodd) in Season 3. While Francesca might be of diamond status in the courting process of the season, her brother Colin’s (Luke Newton) long-anticipated romance with Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) might more closely follow the beats of what the “Bridgerton” audience has become accustomed to.

There has been another behind-the-scenes shake-up at General Hospital as co-head writer Patrick Mulcahey has been released from his position just a little over three months into the role. As first reported by The Buzz, Mulcahey has left his position just months after he and Elizabeth Korte were appointed as the show’s new head writers, replacing the team of Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor. Van Etten is now back on staff as a breakdown writer, while Korte serves as sole head writer. According to Soap Opera Digest, material crafted by the Mulcahey/Korte team will air through mid-summer. The changes are sure to impact storylines, casting, and what viewers will see at home. “There will be more news to share at a later date as to the composition of the new writing team,” a source told Soap Opera Digest. Mulcahey and Korte took the reins of the long-running soap opera back in January,...

After defeating three-day Jeopardy! champion Will Stewart on Wednesday (May 15), grocery clerk Grant DeYoung returned to the Alex Trebek Stage on Thursday (May 16) and continued his winning ways with a dramatic comeback. DeYoung faced off against Elizabeth Brzozowski, a social studies teacher from Fishkill, New York, and Chen Yan, a surgeon from Happy Valley, Oregon. While his opponents put up a solid effort, DeYoung delivered an unbeatable performance. Even after crashing to $0 in the first round after a failed Daily Double, DeYoung remained unfazed and simply worked his way back up. By the end of the Jeopardy round, he’d answered 13 clues correctly for a total of $3,000, putting him only $600 behind Brzozowski. The Prescott, Arizona native stepped on the gas in Double Jeopardy, finding and nailing both Daily Doubles for a combined $11,000. While Chen put up a strong fight, DeYoung was unstoppable, amassing a runaway total of $20,800 heading into Final Jeopardy.

If John Mulaney proved one thing with Everybody’s in L.A., his experimental live talk show that ran last week on Netflix, it’s that he’s a master of chaos. And not the ordered kind.
Between his nightly themes, top-tier musical guests, viewer call-ins, and an embarrassment of late-night legends (see: David Letterman and Jon Stewart), Mulaney had a lot going on. Fortunately, there was one reliable narrator amidst the competing sources of noise: an ongoing series of lower-third captions that identified the show’s various players in a bevy of entertaining ways.
While some of these captions could easily be planned for—at one point, the host himself was identified as being “in a single episode of The Bear,” while Letterman was described as someone who “also had a weird talk show”—others were more spur-of-the-moment. When Bill Hader showed up with a rather prominent eye infection,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 4 Finale “Stabler’s Lament.”] Organized Crime is ending its run on NBC—the drama moves to Peacock for its fifth season—with a case that’s personal to Stabler (Christopher Meloni): His brother, Joe Jr. (Michael Trotter), is embedded with the big bad, Julian Emery (Tom Payne). So when better to throw in another emotional Stabler family dinner? Stabler starts the episode in a very contemplative state, at Kathy’s grave. “I sometimes feel I don’t know where I am. It’s as if the world and everything in it has become unrecognizable. Kids, grandkids, my brothers, ma, unrecognizable,” he admits. “It’s like I’m in a world that’s changed, and I’m trying, but… I know how to do my job and all the things that come with that. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Elsbeth Season 1 Episode 9 “Sweet Justice.”] Revenge may be sweet, but justice? It’s even sweeter and more satisfying. The penultimate episode of the season-long investigation into corruption—Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) was sent to New York to keep an eye on Wagner (Wendell Pierce)—ends with a major arrest. Wagner is, of course, not corrupt but rather, it turned out, a lieutenant and his close friend, Noonan (Fredric Lehne), was—and using his name! Thanks to a well-placed bug, Elsbeth and Wagner were able to follow him to catch him in the act. But once that was done, Wagner had one last move to make: to tell Elsbeth to return to Chicago. Below, Pierce breaks down the emotional episode and teases what’s ahead in the finale. How satisfying was it for Wagner to tell Noonan, “That’s why I got the job and you didn’t”? Wendell Pierce: Especially with...

There have been four victims in the past six months, and their unknown subject is escalating. He uses a coat hanger to bind his victims and sexually assaults them with a gun; the latest is still in the ICU. Not making it any easier is Ada Heidi Russell (Kate Loprest), the new chief of the Trial Division, isn’t exactly making any friends—with Benson (Mariska Hargitay) or Carisi (Peter Scanavino), the only one of the two who does work for her. In fact, she’s fine with charging a man, Hedges, who seems good for the attack that occurs near the beginning of this episode (his fingerprint at the scene)—and that man even pleads guilty—but then there’s another assault. Russell still believes that Hedges is good for ...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers Young Sheldon‘s Series Finale Episodes.] Young Sheldon‘s long-awaited Big Bang Theory crossover with Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik has finally arrived in the series finale, and with it, some answers to previously dropped Easter eggs and more. While the penultimate episode focused on George Sr.’s (Lance Barber) funeral, the finale installment tracked Sheldon through two different periods of his life, in the days leading up to his (Iain Armitage) arrival at Cal-Tech, and a near-future set a few years after The Big Bang Theory in which he’s (Parsons) writing a memoir. As adult Sheldon pieces together memories from that time in the past, his wife Amy (Bialik) pesters him to get ready for their son’s hockey match, which he’s hesitant to attend. But there’s a full-circle moment to it all as Sheldon reflects on his own father and the positive things about him that he’d previously ...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers Young Sheldon‘s Series Finale Episodes.] Young Sheldon closed the book on seven seasons of prequel magic in two final installments, bidding Cooper family patriarch George (Lance Barber) farewell in the first half and sending Sheldon (Iain Armitage) off to college in the second, while also unveiling a glimpse at future Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and his wife Amy (Mayim Bialik). In the tear-jerking opening installment, George’s funeral unfolded, which was understandably difficult for the family to cope with, including matriarch Mary (Zoe Perry). To fully capture the gravity of the unfolding event, Barber decided to lay in the casket for scenes as different family members delivered parting words for the beloved family member. “We can at once be kind of goofing off between takes and taking selfies, me and Lance… and then also when we’re shooting something and our producers ask me to go even further into emotion. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Law & Order Season 23 Finale “In Harm’s Way.”] Heading into the Law & Order finale, we knew that the NBC drama is about to lose another major character. Earlier this season, the show lost a lawyer, with Sam Waterston leaving, and Tony Goldwyn‘s Baxter coming in to replace Jack McCoy as Da (there’s now an election coming up). Now, the cops will be saying goodbye to their lieutenant, with Camryn Manheim exiting. But how was Kate Dixon written out? Well, she wasn’t. Instead, the focus was very much on the case and Baxter. It looks like the Season 24 premiere will have to reveal what happened to Dixon, much like this season’s did with Cosgrove, following Jeffrey Donovan‘s exit over hiatus. The case involved the murder of a sports star—but video reveals that Baxter was the intended target. He refuses to suspend his campaign, and with...

Such is the case with “Step Nine.” In it, hospital burn unit nurse Amir (perpetual scene-stealer Malcolm-Jamal Warner) was in that tragic fire that Bobby accidentally caused and that killed his family. Amir, too, lives with the trauma of that tragedy: He lost his wife, and half his face is burned. Amir goes to Bobby’s AA meeting and makes it clear he knows who he is—and so the captain then tracks him down, where he’s volunteering at a migrant encampment. Just when the Jimmys thought they were finally free of having to compete against John Oliver at the Emmys, another John has popped up in his place—John Mulaney.
Mulaney’s six-episode Netflix series Everybody’s in L.A. has been moved into the Outstanding Talk Series category. This means that, if nominated, Mulaney’s weird little show will face off against The Daily Show, Late Night, The Late Show, and The Tonight Show.
The last-minute change came about as a result of the Television Academy. Netflix had reportedly planned to submit the series for consideration in the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category, which would see it go head-to-head with Saturday Night Live and Last Week Tonight. But, as Variety reports, “Netflix and the creative team felt the show was better suited for the talk series category and, as a result, will now compete against late-night hosts such as Jimmy Kimmel,...

Just like the aristocratic ton, Bridgertonloves tradition. Season 3 follows in the steps of what came before. The premiere opens with a third Bridgerton sister preparing to make her debut. In Season 1, it was romantic Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor); in Season 2, it was anxious Eloise (Claudia Jessie), and now, in Season 3, it’s “pragmatic” Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd). Francesca is new to society, and Dodd is new to viewers. This is the actor’s first season on the show, stepping into a role that was recast for Bridgerton Season 3.
“Francesca has been preparing for [her debut] … Filming it was absolutely terrifying, because it was quite early on in production,” Dodd tells Tudum. “There was a little bit of life imitating art there. She was nervous and I was nervous. She was watching people, and I was watching people to learn. We were kind of going through it together.”...

Unfrosted might not be fully accurate in its portrayal of the race to create the first toaster pastry, but it does capture an essential truth: The more specific nostalgia is, the more universal its appeal. Which is why Unfrosted’s director, co-writer, and star Jerry Seinfeld’s personal passion for the Pop-Tart can be seen through the lens of a subversive yet somehow sweet look back at the ’60s, a time when kids roamed free (and right into dumpsters) and Shakespearean actors moonlighted as cereal mascots.
