Lucia plans a series of musical evenings with herself playing the piano. Not everybody is enchanted - especially Mapp who sees a chance for revenge when she hears of a forthcoming visit by Algernon Wyse's sister, Amelia. She is the widow of an Italian count and speaks the language fluently whilst Lucia claims to but patently does not. Sending Georgie to a hotel Lucia feigns illness and takes to her bed for the visit and Mapp senses triumph. Sadly for her however Georgie has met an Italian family at the hotel who compose a perfectly worded letter in their language - allegedly from Lucia - apologizing to the Contessa for her indisposition . Later several Tilling residents rush to the station for a visit by the Prince of Wales but no prince steps out of the car, only Lucia and Georgie who announce their intention of selling up and moving to Tilling permanently.

Newly widowed Lucia Lucas and her fey friend Georgie arrive in the seaside town of Tilling to rent a house for the summer from Elizabeth Mapp. Mapp herself will rent a smaller house from her friend Diva, who will move in with androgynous artist Quaint Irene. Lucia and Georgie soon ingratiate themselves with local philanthropist Susan Wyse and her husband Algernon - annoying Mapp, who sees herself as the queen of local society and confides in ex-army major Flint. However she trades on the fact that Lucia is a recent widow and as such should NOT be socialising. Lucia is aware of this and declares - refined - war, throwing dinner parties for the great and good of Tilling and putting herself forward to organize the annual charity fete - in Mapp's garden. The event is a huge success, topped by Lucia's inspiring appearance as Elizabeth I. Mapp is not amused, just as Lucia intended.

Mapp continues to lose out on the social scene to Lucia but gets a chance for revenge when Lucia and Georgie submit drawings to the summer art exhibition and Mapp, as a committee member, makes sure that they are rejected. Cunning Lucia makes equally sure that other committee members see them and they are shown, to great acclaim, despite being tracings of photographs. Mapp secures the upper hand when she is visited by an Indian guru, actually intended for Diva, whom she parades around Tilling like a pet. Unfortunately for Mapp Georgie's sisters recognize him as the cook at the local Indian restaurant and he flees, having robbed Mapp, Lucia and Georgie. Mapp wants to call the police but Lucia holds her dishonesty over the drawings over her and they call a truce.
